"Flame of Hope: Lighting the Way for Special Olympics in 2024"

I am thrilled to announce that the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office is proudly participating in the 2024 Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics Florida. This monumental event is not just about running; it’s about rallying together as a community to support a cause that truly makes a difference in the lives of many.
Our Torch Run kicks off Tuesday, April 16 at 8:30 am, marking the beginning of our journey to uphold the values of compassion, inclusivity and support for our Special Olympics athletes. Before diving into the specifics of the run, let’s take a moment to understand the history behind the Law Enforcement Torch Run.
In 1981, Wichita, Kansas Police Chief, Richard LaMunyon, established the Torch Run as a means for law enforcement to actively engage with the community and extend their unwavering support to Special Olympics Kansas. Two years later, Chief LaMunyon presented this noble initiative to the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), who wholeheartedly endorsed the Torch Run, which became the "Founding Law Enforcement Organization" of the movement.
Since then, the Law Enforcement Torch Run has developed into the largest public awareness and fundraising platform for Special Olympics, with over 97,000 law enforcement members carrying the symbolic "Flame of Hope" annually. The flame of courage and the celebration of diversity unites communities worldwide with our Special Olympics athletes.
It is heartening to note that 87 cents of every dollar donated directly contributes to Special Olympics programs, underscoring the efficiency and impact of the collective efforts. Since its inception, the Torch Run has raised over $600 million, empowering Special Olympics to continue its invaluable work.
