CCSO to hosts 7th annual SWAT Team Challenge; 15 agencies competed May 9 2009.
May 9th, 2009 - The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office hosted its seventh annual Special Weapons and Tactics Team Challenge at the Maj. Terry Branscome Training Center on Sat., May 9. SWAT teams from 15 southwest Florida counties in Region-VI will be participating at the center, 25500 Airport Road, Punta Gorda. "This exciting SWAT event was open to the public and was a great family event," according to Sgt. Billie Gorman, of the CCSO Training Division and CCSO SWAT. Of the 15 teams registered to participate, 11 were sheriff's office teams from Charlotte, Lee, Collier, Sarasota, Desoto, Highlands, Osceola, Brevard counties (some have two teams), plus Ft. Myers, Bradenton, Cape Coral and Kissimmee city police departments. These teams competed in four rigorous, grueling physical challenges, testing the team's physical strength, endurance and ability to work as a team. |

The Desoto County Sheriff's Office SWAT (special weapons and tactics) Team is an elite tactical unit. They are trained to perform high-risk operations that fall outside of the abilities of regular officers, including serving high-risk arrest warrants, barricaded suspects, hostage rescue, and engaging heavily-armed criminals. The SWAT team is equipped with specialized firearms including assault rifles, submachine guns, shotguns, carbines, riot control devices, stun grenades, and high-powered rifles for snipers. They have specialized equipment including heavy body armor, entry tools, advanced night vision optics for covertly determining the positions of hostages or hostage takers inside of an enclosed structure.
SWAT duties include:
Hostage rescue.
Crime suppression.
Perimeter security against snipers for visiting dignitaries.
Providing superior assault firepower in certain situations, e.g. barricaded suspects.
Rescuing officers and citizens captured or endangered by gunfire.
Resolve high-risk situations with a minimum loss of life, injury or property damage.
Resolve situations involving barricaded subjects.
Stabilize situations involving high-risk suicidal subjects.
Provide assistance on drug raids, arrest warrants and search warrant service.
Provide additional security at special events.
Stabilizing dangerous situations dealing with violent criminals (such as rapists, serial killers or gangs).
